Selecting Area Rugs

Adding an area rug to a room is a great way give that room a new look, provide warmth and add color. Find a rug that you love and use it as inspiration to decorate the space around it. Area rugs are easy to move from room to room. You can put rugs in different rooms of your home to create fresh looks.

An area rug can be the foundation of your room's look. Even if your taste is traditional, a contemporary rug can add a nice contrast. In a modern room, a traditional or Oriental rug can soften the look.

Look for a common accent color in your room and find a rug with that color in it for additional emphasis. If your room is brightly colored, select a neutral colored rug. If your room is neutral, a vibrant rug will add a needed statement and focal point.

In general, dark colored rugs add warmth to a room while light colored rugs make a space appear larger. If you have pets or children, consider a dark or multi-colored rug to hide dirt.

Area rugs are great for defining spaces within a room. You can create sitting area or a cozy space in front of a fireplace. If you are using a rug to define a space, leave no more than two feet of carpet past the edge of the furniture.

Your Abbey Expert can help you select the right area rug for you. Whether it’s traditional, tropical contemporary or transitional we’ll help you find the perfect look.

Knot count refers to how many knots there are in a rug in a certain area--the higher the knot count, the longer it takes to weave the rug. However, that doesn't make a difference in the actual quality of the rug. It will be strong either way, but it will be slightly stronger if it has a high knot count.
