Roofing work can occur on a new or existing building. There are several different terms to describe roofing work on existing buildings.

Repairs – Can include either the removal and replacement of a localized membrane and insulation or the removal of the membrane only and new surfacing on top of the existing membrane.

Recovering – The process of installing additional roof covering over top of an existing membrane without removing the existing membrane.

Replacement – The process of removing the existing roof covering, repairing damaged substrate and installing a new roof covering. This process is also known as tear off and replacement.
