Even with an elevation of 7165, Laramie is nestled among scenic
vistas that surround the area.
Laramie, established as a railroad town, stands astride a pair of
the nation's most significant transcontinental arteries, Interstate 80
and the Union Pacific's main line. Originally a railroad town, the
discovery of gold in the Snowy Range began a transformation. In 1886 the
legislature presented Laramie with a gift that would eventually turn
this cow town into a college town with the state's only four year
institution of higher education. The University of Wyoming was opened in
1887, four years before Wyoming became a state.
