A Place Where Warm Memories Are Made

About The Spencer Hotel

The Spencer begins its second century with improvements to the hotel’s physical facility, as well as enrichment programming designed to expand on the Chautauqua experience. We continue to offer guests the modern amenities and conveniences of the 21st century in an extraordinary American setting. The Chautauqua Institution is a United States National Historical District, and we are proud to be a part of it.

Our guest rooms were decorated by local artists to honor the lives and works of famous authors. Each also offers a select library of their books, and musical selections are available that further convey the tone of their lives and times. Hand-painted murals grace many of our walls, floors and ceilings. Guests will also find faux finishes and yards of English lace in addition to custom-made drapes, dust ruffles and lampshades. The parlor and dining room have Strauss crystal, Oriental carpets and beautiful Victorian antiques. An elevator services all four floors. Four floors of porches grace the front of the hotel, and are appointed with Victorian sofas, chairs and rockers which overlook the famous Amphitheatre.

The Spencer offers cozy areas that are perfect for playing a board game, curling up with a good book, or engaging in conversation. During pleasant weather our front porches provide a prime vantage point to take in the essence of Chautauqua. In our Monet Parlor a large television, as well as a movie projector and screen are available for use.

The Spencer Spa has been busy this summer and fall, and we have added to our year-round roster of trained technicians. Your experience includes our custom-made sauna, the all-cotton lushness of our monogrammed bath robes, and a well-designed menu of services, including massage, manicures, pedicures, facials, and hair styling. Guests may also request spa services in privacy of their room or in the fresh air of our second-floor balcony.

Experience The Spencer enrichment workshops. Weeklong residential writing, wellness, and specialty retreats offer a Spencer exclusive: five full days and nights of small group contact in the historic setting of our hotel with known professionals in the literary, wellness, and culinary fields.

We will be introducing our New Chef this year and dinner will be served nightly during the Chautauqua Season. While dining at The Spencer you can accompany your meal with a select wine, and we offer coffee and tea in our Parlor throughout the day and evening.
